When first introduced in 1964 as a performance package for the Cutlass, the 4-4-2 designation referred to 4 speed manual transmission, 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. Over the years that meaning changed a bit but in its final years the transmission was a 4-speed automatic with overdrive, and it still had a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust outlet. Equipped with an 8.5-inch GM corporate differential and all were equipped with 3.73:1 ring and pinion final drive gears. Rather than using the weaker 7.5-inch rear differential found in the Monte carlo SS. Many 442s did not come with RPO G80 (limited-slip). This was due to dealer ordering packages that grouped popular options together for ease of ordering, these models used the same stout unit found in the Buick Grand National (a specific differential designed by Eaton).
