VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Used 1964 Studebaker Avanti for sale in Phoenix, Arizona

Gateway Classic Cars of Scottsdale is proud to offer this sought-after 1964 Studebaker Avanti for sale on consignment with our Arizona showroom, located in North Phoenix. The Avanti was one of the fastest and most advanced American vehicles ever made when it hit showroom floors in 1962. The orders came flying in but Studebakers problem was they couldnt keep pace with demand. The Avanti had a complex fiberglass body construction that required more time and skilled labor to produce than customers had patience for. Buyers grew tired of waiting and canceled their orders, meanwhile parent company Studebakers financial woes and death spiral continued to worsen. The short 18-month production run for the Avanti ended in December 1963 with less than 5,000 cars built in total- this car would have been built in late 63 but titled as a 1964. This car is painted in Black and has all kinds of design quirks from the curved sides, coke-bottle beltline and a jacked up rear end that gave the car a wedge-like profile from the side. It has a European grand tourer look that many American-made cars at the time were struggling to replicate. For power, Studebaker pulled the 289 CID V8 engine straight from its Hawk and in naturally aspirated form like this car it would have put out around 240 factory rated horsepower. The engine pulls strong in every gear and the transmission (a 4-speed manual) is easy to use with a light clutch. The throaty mufflers with dual exiting pipes really help this car sound as good as it looks and turn a lot of heads. The interior of the Avanti is a design feat on its own! The Black vinyl seating to the ornamental steering wheel, woodgrain accents and the upscale center console and gauge cluster; its all ergonomically pleasing and well ahead of its time. Theres even a functional cubby to access the trunk compartment in the back seats- probably a nod to the “family element of this 4-passenger car so the kids could access the cooler in the trunk while driving! You already know that this 1964 Studebaker is worth taking a look at for collectability alone. Just wait until you get behind the wheel though; youll have a hard time staying away from driving it!
