Used 1962 Mercury Meteor for sale in Dearborn, Michigan
Gateway Classic Cars of Detroit is proud to offer this gorgeous 1962 Mercury Meteor for sale. In 1962, Mercury marketing decided that the Monterey nameplate had better consumer recognition than the Meteor moniker as far as full-sized vehicles were concerned (despite the fact that the Meteor outsold the Monterey), and instead assigned the Meteor name to a new line of mid-sized cars based on the Ford Fairlane which, in turn, was based on a long-wheelbase version of the Ford Falcon chassis. This smaller, mid-sized Meteor filled the product gap between the full-sized Monterey and the compact, Ford Falcon-based Mercury Comet. the 1962 Meteors wore unique rear quarter panels that mimicked the Montereys jet-pod taillights. This 62 is sporting the Larger engine option with the 260 CID mill pushing power to it 2 speed Ford-O-matic transmission. The Ford-o-matic two-speed transmission was introduced in 1959. A simplified version of the Cruise-O-Matic, it combined a torque connector and a compound planetary gear set. A front unit (multiple-disc) clutch provided high gear, a front band on the clutch drum provided low gear, and a band on the rear unit internal gear drum provided reverse. This transmission was offered on Ford models Falcon, Fairlane, and Galaxie, Mercury models Comet, and Meteor and Edsel cars with differences in the torque converter, valve bodies and clutch plates to accommodate differing engine torques. This is a great cruiser that will grab attention with its subtle blue flame pin striping. This classic moves as great as it looks with responsive steering and a soft ride.
