The 58 Thunderbirds, as well as the 58 Lincolns, were Fords first unibody construction vehicles, which was cutting edge at the time. In addition to changing the construction, Ford also made the Thunderbird quite a bit larger than the previous generation to accommodate the addition of back seats. Though some T-Bird enthusiasts were disappointed to see them ditch the two-seat layout, the market seemed to like it. Ford sold two times as many Thunderbirds in 1958 as the previous year.
