In 1951, George Barris purchased a then brand-new Mercury Coupe for himself, it didn’t take long, and he had fully customized it, a passerby liked it so much that he ordered a customized Mercury for himself. That car became known as the Hirohata Merc, after its owner, and would go on to be one of the most famous customized cars of the decade, thanks in part to Barris’ restyling and through traveling the county with GM’s Motorama auto show. This is how the 1949-1951 Mercury became a kustom car icon and now one of the most popular cars to turn into a full kustom. This kustom 1949 Mercury comes to us as a beautiful chopped lead sled, and with it’s classic chopped roofline you’d be forgiven if you thought it was one of the Pharaohs cruising by.
