VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Used 1970 Checker Marathon for sale in DFW Airport, Texas

Now available at our Dallas-Ft.Worth Showroom location is this unique and rare 1970 Checker Marathon-Medicar! The Checker Marathon is an automobile produced by the Checker Motors Corporation of Kalamazoo, Michigan, between 1961 and 1982. It was marketed as a passenger car for consumers, as opposed to the similar Taxi, which was aimed at fleet buyers. Marathons were produced in both four-door sedan and four-door station wagon forms, and the rare eight-door, 12-seater Aerobus wagon. Except for United States government-mandated 5 mph bumpers in 1974 and ongoing mechanical changes, the Marathon remained virtually unchanged during its 21-year production run. However, Checker did comply with all safety and emissions requirements while in production. The final Marathon was manufactured in 1982, when Checker exited the automobile manufacturing business. The company continued operations for an additional 27 years producing body stampings for General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, until January 2009, when it entered bankruptcy liquidation as a result of the downturn in the USA auto industry. In 1969 Checker introduced the Medicar, a special version of the Marathon designed to transport handicapped and non-ambulatory passengers. Built on a 129-inch wheel base chassis, the Medicar was designed to provide maximum comfort, safety and protection for up to three in-transit non-ambulatory persons. With a raised roof, 54 inches of interior height, and the standard Checker Marathon flat floor, the Medicar was ideal wheelchair-bound passengers, but could be converted to a six-passenger limousine in minutes. A Nebraska traveling doctor traveling from town to town providing medical services to needy patients originally purchased this Medicar. A custom restoration and transformation turned this Medicar into a fantastic daily driver with all the amenities one would wish for in a classic limousine. ASI Interiors, made famous by the show “Fast & Loud” along with Versace inlaid door panels crafted this black ostrich leather interior with red piping; make this Medicar a one of a kind! The industrial strength of heavy-duty shocks, transmission, and engine with a hand-crafted Birdseye Maple dash, make this Medicar an automobile lover’s dream. With chrome grill and bumpers, light bezels, slick black paint, Audiobahn stero system and Ostrich Bar.
