For sale in our Saint Louis showroom is an all original, surviving 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. BACKGROUND: Toyota started production of the Land Cruiser FJ40 in 1960 and began importing them to the US in 1963. The last US-bound FJ rolled off the line in 1983, making a brief comeback as a modern SUV in the US called the FJ Cruiser from 2006 to 2014. From 1963 to 1983 the FJ40 saw little change aesthetically, the only real changes were improvements in technology mechanically. The Classic FJs are as comfortable on a trail as they are on the highway because they were designed to do anything you could ever ask it to do and do it well. This FJ40 is a total survivor, sporting the original Mustard Yellow paint, vinyl interior, and original engine and transmission. This old school SUV is not perfect, it has character throughout, but it is a wonderful example of a California survivor. The 4.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine has plenty of torque and is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. These Toyota FJ’s featured folding jump seats behind the passenger and driver seats. These folding seats not only made carrying another 2 passengers possible but also allowed for maximum cargo space, as opposed to the folding rear seat in the Jeep CJ series. The hard top on this FJ40 is removable like a Jeep, although it does require a bit more work. Once the top is off though, it is totally worth it, as is has an awesome topless appearance. The odometer reads 17,988, which has rolled over, and the original mileage is believed to be 117,988.
