At its debut, the Oldsmobile Toronado featured an array of revolutionary innovations including the heavy-duty Turbo-Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission and an improved 425 CID V8 topped with a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor. This particular combination was called the Unitized Power Package (UPP) which endured grueling testing and came out as one of the best built powertrains out of Detroit.
